The Land of Bastogne Bastogne, Bertogne, Fauvillers, Sainte-Ode and Vaux-sur-Sûre are
the main little towns of this region dominated of course by the international fame gained by
Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge in 1944.
The interest of the Land of Bastogne is however not limited to the vestiges of WW2 and the many memorials in the area.
It has much more to offer as visitors will soon discover.
Bastogne is renowned for the famous battle of Bastogne in December 1944, the museum and memorial that tell the story of the battle ; but also for its cured meats, bars, taverns, many shops (opened on Sunday) and its buffalo meat from the close by Bison
farm.
The American Memorial on Mardasson Hill Erected in 1950 the Bastogne memorial represents the tribute of the Belgian people to the American army and its allies for their participation in liberating Europe.
This was achieved due to the
initiative of the Belgo-American Association, a group wishing to perpetuate
the memory of the gallant American youth that died on our soil.
The walls bear
the names of the units that participated in the battle from 16th December
1944 to 25th January 1945 and the story of the historic
Ardennes Offensive.
This memorial has the shape of a five-pointed star.
At the summit you will discover a huge panoramic view. At the foot of the monument,
the French painter FERNAND LEGER decorated the crypt with three mosaics.
